2)    To help the students develop the ability to read diary entries.

      The way of reading diary entries.

Teaching procedures:

Step1 Lead-in

1.        What does lost civilization mean?

2.        Show two pictures, asking the students to guess

3.        Prediction of the passage

Suppose our school arranged for you to go on a cultural expedition to these two sites of lost civilizations and at the same time you were asked to keep a travel diary , what would you write about the cities of Pompeii and Loulan?

You might write:

What you feel abou t Pompeii and Loulan?

Now let’s read the diary kept by Ann.

Step2 Fast reading

Ask students to read the passage quickly and try to find :

( 1 ) the outline of  the diary

( 2 ) the arrangements / plans of each day.

Step 3 Careful reading

Ask the students to read the diary again, then deal with it paragraph by paragraph.

Loulan---the lost civilization of ancient China

1. When was it founded?

2. What kind of city was it?

Listen to the last paragraph and answer the questions below:

1. How was Loulan discovered?

2. What can you see about the city now?

Step 4 Discussion

What caused the city of loulan to disappear?
What caused the sandstorms?
How can we avoid such tragedy happening again?
